About me

Hi, I'm Maria

Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in Rio Grande City, Texas. I work with children, teens, adults and older adults, in Spanish or English.

I know how much it matters to feel at ease, and to be able to express yourself in your own language, when you are going through a hard time. That is why I especially love serving the Spanish-speaking community.

I began my career in 2018 as a chemical dependency counselor, supporting adults and teens affected by alcohol and drugs. Since 2022 I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor, also working with anxiety, depression and trauma. I deeply believe that everyone can heal and grow when they have a safe space and the right support.

My approach

My style is warm, empathetic and collaborative. I listen without judgment, respect your culture, your values and your pace, and together we choose the tools that fit you. I combine evidence-based approaches, always centered on you as a person.

My approaches

How we work, in plain words

These are the approaches I use most often. You don't need to know them before you start: we choose together what works best for you.

  1. 01

    Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Helps you notice the thoughts that make you feel worse and swap them for more helpful ones, with practical exercises for everyday life.

  2. 02

    Trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT)

A version of CBT designed for children and teens who have been through difficult experiences, step by step and with parents involved.

  3. 03

    Motivational interviewing

A pressure-free conversation that helps you find your own reasons for change, especially helpful with alcohol or substance use.

  4. 04

    Interpersonal therapy

Focuses on your relationships and life changes, such as losses, conflicts or new chapters, and how they affect your mood.

  5. 05

    Cognitive processing therapy (CPT)

A structured approach to trauma that helps you understand and rethink the beliefs left behind by what you lived through.

  6. 06

    Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

You learn to make room for difficult emotions instead of fighting them, and to take steps toward what truly matters to you.

  7. 07

    Solution-focused brief therapy

Instead of staying stuck on the problem, we look at what already works for you and set small, concrete steps toward your goals.
